Mariager Saltcenter

Harbour · 5 min walk

Float in the Dead Sea, 39 °C salt water, descend into the salt mine with its FunRide cinema, and watch salt being boiled in the boiling hut. From December 2026 a new bath and wellness area with warm salt baths, salt rooms and a heated outdoor pool overlooking the fjord.

What remains of the 15th-century Bridgettine convent. The white convent church on the hill and the convent garden with medieval medicinal plants.

Mariager Rose Garden

Best June to August

About 800 roses of 400 varieties in 22 themed beds, from the world's oldest cultivated rose hybrid to modern Danish roses. Tended by volunteers, free to visit.

Mariager Museum

A 300-year-old merchant's house in the old convent town with a recreated 1935 grocer's shop and a summer festival.

Mariager-Handest heritage railway

2 km from the house

Scandinavia's largest Bronze Age burial mound, 110 metres above sea level with wide views over the fjord. The 3 km Oldtidsruten passes Iron Age settlements and viewpoints.

The Mariager Route

12.2 km loop · starts at the harbour

Certified premium walking trail past Færgehagen, Vesterskov, the Sukkertoppen viewpoint, the rose garden, Munkholm park, Hohøj and Alstrup Krat, and back through the old town. Short 5 km version available.

The Panorama Route

10 km loop · about 3 hours · Hobro

Denmark's first premium-certified walking route, along the north shore through Bramslev Bakker. Hilly with narrow paths and grazing cattle. Take the Svanen from Mariager to Bramslev Bakker and walk from there.

Katbjerg Odde

4.6 km loop

Protected headland west of Mariager with springs, orchids and Stone Age mounds.

Mariager Fjord Route, cycle route 32

65 km around the fjord

All the way round the fjord through Hobro, Mariager and Hadsund. Can be split into two stages with the Svanen as the link, the boat carries up to 10 bikes.

Along the fjord past Dania and Mariager and on to Glenstrup Lake.

Swimming at Færgehagen

5 min walk

A 51 m bathing pier with 1.8 m of water at the end, used all year. Toilets, kiosk and dogs welcome. Mariager Beach is right next to it.

Kayak and SUP

Calm water

The inner fjord is sheltered and almost always calm, perfect for beginners. Hire in Mariager and Hobro, guided tours available.

The tour boat Svanen

June to September

Sails between Mariager, Bramslev Bakker, Hobro and Hadsund, daily in high season. Evening cruises with a grill buffet. Bikes can come along.

Sea trout

The fjord is known for sea trout. Adults aged 18 to 65 need the Danish national fishing licence, bought online.

The sailing club and kayak club are by the harbour. Water skiing and kite surfing on parts of the outer fjord.
